If you are going to drive all the way from Miami to Key West and then back again in one day, you are going to want to try all the key lime Pie.
When I say all the pie, please imagine it in the way Ron Swanson says, “Give me all* the bacon and eggs you have.”
*Not a lot of, all.
We started before reaching Key West after a little bit of research brought up Porky’s Bayside Restaurant and Marina and their deep-fried key lime pie.
I knew if it was anything like the deep-fried cheesecake we experienced a few years ago in Wildwood, I was going to be happy.
Deep fried AND topped with guava drizzle?!
It did not disappoint.
We still had an hour drive to reach the Southernmost Point of the Continental US, which gave us time to prepare for what was to come.
Before we decided on this day trip to Key West, I had heard about key lime pie on a stick. I had not, however, heard of deep-fried key lime pie. So, before even reaching Key West, I kind of felt like the great adventurer who had seen all and done all before even reaching the top of the mountain.
Good thing I kept climbing.
As one might expect, key lime pie is everywhere in Key West. But we wanted to make sure we were having the authentic, best possible key lime pie experience.
Key West Key Lime Pie Company felt like the right place for this.
The pie here was thick and creamy, a borderline cheesecake. I loved every bite. Even more, I loved that they sold all kinds of key lime pie flavored treats like jelly beans, hard candies, and pretzels. My all-time favorite was their key lime pie chocolate bar. I wish I bought ten.
Our final key lime pie stop was Kermit’s Key West Key Lime Pie Shoppe. It was, as the name says, a shop, with samples of all kinds of key lime delights including jellies and dressings, and of course, key lime pie. I bought a bottle of their key lime concentrate. The pies here were much more the traditional key lime pie consistency I’m used to, which is obtained from lots of sweetened condensed milk. In addition to their key lime pie on a stick, they also had pies with all sorts of added fruit flavors.
We’ve been home from this little trip for over two months now and it might just be the time for me to shine a little light on our solitude and relive our day in the Keys as I try to make my own*.
*I’m aiming for that cheesecake-like consistency of Key West Key Lime Pie Company.
Wish me luck.
