Where have the cozy coffee shops gone?
Why do the chains* consume our world and we willingly accept it?
*I can drive to three different chain coffeehouses within five minutes of my house, but the closest independent coffeehouses are at least ten minutes away.
Before this gets political or too depressing, let me tell you about one of those cute little independent coffee spots close to home.
Turtle Beans has been in Bordentown for a few years now, and it’s an added stop along the cute, and very busy, street of Farnsworth Ave that we didn’t know we needed until it was finally there.
I’ve had coffee here a handful of times, and each time I’ve had no complaints*. My most recent visit was with friends, and so of course, my time was framed by laughter, good conversation, and constant affirmation for the greatness of the coffee, food, and environment of this cozy spot. Since it wasn’t my first time, I already knew the coffee would be fabulous, and was delighted to discover the treats were of the same quality.
*I’m not a complainer, I promise, but when it comes to coffee, I have unmovable expectations, so sometimes, I complain.
We shared everything, because isn’t that they best way to eat with friends? My favorite was their Churro Croffel—which is basically a croissant turned into a churro without all the deep frying. So, a churro perfected, in my opinion.

The vibe inside is incredibly relaxed. The staff are friendly and fun. And it’s Bordentown, so if you can get beyond the awful parking situation* and it’s a beautiful day, you can wander around town with a second cup of coffee** in hand.
*Why oh why is it only getting more difficult to find parking here?
**You’re going to want a second, right?
It only could be better if I could walk, instead of drive, there.
A girl can wish.
