Today I have the best news*.
*No, my writing did not get picked up by an agent or major publisher.
Correction: I have great news.
And I’m going to give it to you by way of feet pictures.
1. In 2007, Lance and I bought our first house: “New York Ave”
We bid on two other homes, one which was 40 minutes south of us, one where the offer was accepted but we didn’t end up purchasing because of septic issues, before finding New York Ave. We closed* during our honeymoon.
*Or rather, my dad closed for us.
2. January 2015, Lance and I attempted to sell New York Ave
Despite loving the home we’d chosen, for the first five years we lived in New York Ave, we didn’t put anything on the walls. That’s how uncertain we were that we’d stay there.
3. August 2018, Lance and I tried again to sell New York Ave
When the For Sale sign went up, we told everyone we didn’t have high hopes. New York Ave was a beautiful first home, but it had a lot working against it*, we still hoped for a chance to leave. We dropped the price to a point that we’d be taking debt along with our moving boxes, and waited.
*150+ years old, one bathroom, no central air…to name a few.
4. September 2021, Lance and I sold our first house.
Don’t ever be fooled that selling and leaving a home you’ve lived in and loved is easy—even if it’s one you’ve been wanting to leave for six years. New York Ave had been a place of comfort, protection, heartbreak, joy, and so much more to us for fourteen years. Despite it being most certainly the right time to sell, as I walked around the empty house on closing day, my heart broke a little and my mind wondered if we’d be able to find a home so ‘us’ ever again.
5. Today we closed on our new home.
I have so much to say about the adventure that us finding this house has been*. But this will be saved for another post. The long and short of it is this: We shouldn’t have gotten this house.
*Yes, the end of that sentence is an awkward read, but my overworked mind cannot fix it.
