I had this really thoughtful start to a blog post. It was going somewhere great.
And then it disappeared.
I’m midway through a graduate course on writing horror, so I’ve pretty much concocted a complete story in my head of grim grinning ghosts coming out to socialize with my random brain jottings. In the end, they decide that deleting the final page of my file would be the most devious and devilish decision they could make.
The bulk of my reading and writing these days has been spent lost in worlds of haunted houses and dark places*, which makes jumping back into blogging a little jarring.
*And, also, the strange world of all things Kafka due to fulfilling a literature course requirement. Hmmm…perhaps that’s where my lost notes went?
Thus far I’ve learned two things:
- I can write horror*.
- I do not like Kafka.
*Per conferencing with my teacher, not my own bigheaded opinion, promise.
Of course, we are only midway through the semester, so it’s very possible that by December I won’t be able to write horror and I’ll have a deep love for Kafka.
It is the season, after all, for absurd happenings.
It’s taken pretty much my entire life and a younger brother who loves* Halloween, but I’m finally embracing this holiday. I’ve been consistently dressing up for a few years now and this year I’m actually kind of excited about my costume—the true sign of a Halloween lover, right?
*An understatement. He stops in his tracks for all things Halloween. He poses with inanimate Halloween decorations. He owns enough costumes to possibly wear a different one each day during the month of October.
Having been raised and still a ‘practicing*’ Christian, Halloween was a taboo thing to celebrate for most of my childhood. And by the time I was an adult, I saw it just as a silly holiday where people pretended to be something they’re not.
*This is such a weird word, but a common word which I’m using to essentially say that I live Christianity, I don’t just claim it.
But now I just see it as a day about having fun. A day you can dress up, get together with people whose company you enjoy, and share togetherness.
Please enjoy this picture of me and Jon last Halloween.
