In Italian class, my teacher asks each year what my ‘obiettivi’ for the next year are.
The translation is essentially ‘objectives’ but can range anywhere from ‘targets’ to also ‘goals’.
I like these words better than resolutions.
Resolutions seem* definite. That’s probably why in last year’s post, I emphasized the word ‘goals’ instead of resolutions.
*Though we all know they usually are not.
I worked towards* all my objectives for 2020:
*Which I think counts as success.
1. I journaled a lot, however, I’m still working out what my preference is when it comes to taking notes about life. Do I need flowery words and moment by moment details or do I only need brief notes on what happened?*
*If you are a journaler, share with me your tips. My biggest difficulty is making the time for it.
2. I wore many clothes I’ve avoided for years and cleaned out my closet twice.
3. I’m now teetering around a B2 level in Italian.
4. I read over 40 books.
This year’s objectives are kind of cliché, but as I thought about the changes I’d like to make in my life, they were the thoughts which kept coming to me:
1. Minimize social media
This one is tough, something I go back and forth on all the time. We all know the positives and negatives of social media; I don’t need to get into it. But for me, I find I get bogged down by it. Not to mention that scrolling on my phone becomes a mindless task replacing moments I could be reading, studying Italian, or doing basically anything else productive*.
*I don’t intend to deactivate my accounts so I can still post blogs, check out family/close friends posts, and be available for those who communicate through messenger.
2. Declutter
I’ve kind of been working towards this for a while. My closet goal last year and the purging of our bookshelf were a start. I don’t intend to go all Marie Kondo on my home, but I do intend to part ways with things simply taking up space.
3. Follow through with healthier eating habits and workout plan
I mean, this is the cliché of all clichés in the world of New Year’s resolutions, right? Clearly because it is something everyone feels is worthwhile when it comes to self-improvement. My plans are still developing for how I will accomplish this goal, but hopefully I’ll have more to say about it soon.
4. Continue academic development.
At this point, achieving language goals, reading more, and continuing on with my master’s program are of high importance, yet they now fit together best under the same objective. It is my hope to be at a C1 level in Italian, to have read 50 books, and to be half way through my master’s program by 2022.
