If you’re looking for something fun to do for your pup while staying at home, today’s Make it Monday is for you.
For Christmas, I gave homemade treats to all the doggies in my life*. A few weeks ago, my MIL told me her dog, Zach, had finished his and wanted more.
*There are quite a few!
I wish I could tell you that making dog treats at home is something I do to keep from purchasing preservative filled treats in the store…but that isn’t the truth. We have bags and bags of store-bought treats for Stitch.
But it’s kind of like baking for humans. I enjoy doing it, while I equally enjoy purchasing treats made by others.
This recipe is super simple. Like…mix, roll, cut, and bake simple. You can do it!
Dogs are also really great food recipients, at least the ones I know. They receive anything I make with eager acceptance and a desire for more.
Homemade Dog Cookies
Ingredients
- 3 cups whole wheat flour
- 1 cup yellow corn flour
- 1 cup rolled oats, regular or quick
- 2 T parsley
- 1 cup chunky peanut butter
- ¼ cup vegetable oil
- 2 eggs, beaten
- 1 cup chicken broth or water
Directions
- Preheat oven to 350º and prepare two baking sheets with parchment or Silpats.
- In a large bowl, combine flours, oats, and parsley.
- Add peanut butter, vegetable oil, and eggs. Mix lightly. Then add broth or water a little at a time. Depending on the weather and your dough, you may use less or more.
- At this point, you might need to get in with your hands and work the dough. If it is still seeming dry, add a little more broth or water. Once the dough has come together, place it on a clean surface.
- Roll the dough until it is about ¼ inch thick. Use a cookie dough cutter to cut the cookies. Place on prepared baking sheets. They do not spread so you can place them very close together.
- Continue to reuse scraps to make more cookies.
- Bake cookies for 35 minutes or until lightly brown. Store in an air-tight container for several weeks.
