I’m a goal-oriented person, though I often skip over the whole goal setting part where a normal person might write down or speak out loud their goals. I know in my head the general direction I’m aiming for and get there by way of continual planning and redirecting in order to keep myself on track.
Sometimes I decide to take a detour and completely forget my original goal and upon traveling a new route find my goal has changed.
It’s okay for goals to change.
I suppose this is why I never make New Year’s resolutions. I don’t want to feel bound to something I said in the glow of the new year and the optimism which seems to abound from everyone’s lips as it nears midnight on December the 31st.
That being said, I’m going to break from the norm and set some goals, or resolutions, if you must.
- Keep more notes about life. This is a constant goal of mine; one I tend to build upon year by year. It started the year we got Stitch when I began a dog journal documenting moments and feelings I don’t want to forget as the years take us further from the first day he entered our home. One day we’ll forget things which we had such strong feelings about today. Sometimes it’s nice to revisit those moments.
- Wear my clothes. There are far too many items in my closet I’m hanging on to as though they are going to save my life one day. This year my goal is to be conscious of every item in my closet. Anything in my closet or storage which I don’t fit, haven’t worn in the past year, or have been avoiding because truth be told, I don’t like it, goes out for donation in January 2021.
- Reach C1 level in Italian. The Council of Europe has arranged language proficiency for European languages into six levels: A1/A2, B1/B2, C1/C2 or three broad levels: basic, independent, proficient. After Hubby pestered me for a few weeks, alright months, to ask my teacher, I was told I am now a B1. It’s difficult, especially without having anyone to practice on aside from my teachers, but I’ve been told it’s an attainable goal. I hope so.
- Read more. In January 2019, I started a journal to document the books I read each year. Don’t worry, I’ve got a separate blog post stored up to share what I read with you. I think the ability to read and the pleasure and education gained from reading is something taken for granted far too often. One of the things I love when I get to chat with my SIL, Mallory, is that eventually she’ll ask, “What are you reading right now?” And that will spiral us into a long conversation about books, which I love.
Do you have any ‘goals’ for 2020?
